Consulting Program Officer
Position: Consulting Project Officer

Experience: Ideally the successful candidate will bring to the position previous experience in the organizational development of young nonprofit organizations and fundraising. Work experience within an international humanitarian organization is highly desirable.
1. BACKGROUND
The Medical Aid Committee (MAC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit humanitarian organization, which works with partner NGOs to support health care in communities affected by conflict, natural disasters and epidemics. All of our supported programs are developed in partnership with local communities and prioritize the strengthening of their health care capacities and resources. We support primary health care programs through fixed and mobile health clinics, access to safe drinking water, preventative health education and programs for traumatized individuals and communities. We strive to improve the immediate and long-term health and wellbeing of communities emerging from crises through sustainable programs.
Through our support to experienced humanitarian providers and their local partners, MAC promotes sustainable, integrated health care during vulnerable transitions from crises to development.
MAC currently supports programs in Sudan, Chad, Angola, Sri Lanka and the Central African Republic, with plans to expand to Haiti shortly.
2. JOB DESCRIPTION
2.1 General description of the post:
The Program Officer is MAC’s only current employee; as such the position fulfills a key role within our developing organization. The Program Officer is responsible for assisting the Board to develop the organization, specifically in developing systems and fundraising. The Program Officer is expected to work in close partnership with MAC’s grantee organizations and will be supervised by MAC’s Board of Director and, in particular, its President and Executive Director.
2.2 Responsibilities:
Administration and Organizational Development
- Oversee the professional administration of the organization, centralize and update all MAC records.
- Maintain and regularly update a database of donors, supporters and contacts.
- Assist MAC’s Treasurer with book-keeping and monitoring of MAC’s finances.
- Undertake the administrative follow-up of donations received including the issuing of compliant tax receipts and follow up.
- Liaise closely with the Treasurer and our legal advisor’s to ensure that MAC complies with all Federal and State tax and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Assist MAC with its annual strategy and budget and review objectives on a regular basis.
- Support the MAC Board - help arrange events, travel, board meetings, etc.
- When appropriate, assist MAC with the establishment of an office in the US.
Fundraising
- Create and maintain a database of potential MAC donors including individuals, private US foundations and corporations.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the US fundraising environment and best practice approaches to communicating with donors and developing funding proposals for foundations and corporations.
- Develop submissions and proposals to solicit funding from private foundation and corporations.
- Foster links and networks with potential donors and ensure appropriate follow-up with donors.
- Encourage and support board members’ active involvement in fundraising and use of their personal and professional networks.
- Organize fundraising events in coordination with the board
Communications and Marketing
- Develop and maintain high quality communication and marketing tools, including MAC’s website and promotional brochures.
- Maintain social media sites (Facebook, blogs, etc.).
- Ensure reactive and professional contacts with MAC donors, grantees and supporters and respond promptly to general enquiries regarding the organization.
- Coordinate and distribute a quarterly MAC newsletter with assistance from grantees.
- Plan MAC’s future communications strategy.
Other
- Liaise closely with grantee teams in the field to maintain an excellent understand of our supported humanitarian programs and the contexts in which they occur.
- Ensure an effective working relationship between MAC and its grantees.
- Where identified as a priority by the MAC Board, undertake short field missions to further understand our humanitarian work.
- Assist grantees in developing relationships with US-based institutional donors as needed.
- Support the pro bono analysis of humanitarian aid outcomes data from the field
- Undertake other tasks as directed by MAC Board.
3. REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
- Previous experience in the development of young nonprofit organizations or a strong understanding of the US and European NGO sector.
- Experience in fundraising, particularly with private donors, on behalf of nonprofit organizations.
- Work experience in a post-crisis environment or within a humanitarian organization is highly desirable.
- French language skills would be a distinct advantage.
- Good project management and administrative skills.
- Excellent writing skills and experience developing communications materials.
- Web and graphic design skills a plus.
